Liverpool legend Graeme Souness claims Jurgen Klopp’s side are a ‘more basic’ team than ‘artistic’ Manchester City
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has labelled the current Reds team as ‘more basic’ than ‘artistic’ title rivals Manchester City. The Citizens reduced Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to four points with a 2-1 win at the Etihad on Thursday night, breathing new life into the race to be crowned 2018/19 champions.City claimed a hard-fought win against the leaders2
City claimed a hard-fought win against the leaders
And Souness, who won a catalogue of honours as a Liverpool player, claimed City managed to stifle the Reds’ hardworking and physical midfield on their way to victory. In his column for The Sunday Times, Souness writes: “As a Liverpool supporter, I see Jurgen Klopps side as a more basic team than Manchester City.“With Liverpool, you know what youre going to get. Their midfield is hardworking and physical and on Thursday evening, City knew they had to deal with that.”He continues: “With players such as Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Bernardo Silva, Pep Guardiolas Manchester City are a more artistic sidethan Liverpool.“But this was not the quality that got them a 2-1 win on Thursday evening. Rather it was the energy and the effort put in by the creative players when Liverpool had possession.”When working as a pundit for Sky Sports for the game, Souness labelled City man Fernandinho as ‘the best midfielder in the country‘.Liverpool lost the midfield battle, with Fernandinho running the show2
Liverpool lost the midfield battle, with Fernandinho running the show
And he took the opportunity to heap praise on the Brazilian again, adding:“They [Manchester City] succeeded because Fernandinho is the best defensive midfielder in our league and he was at his outstanding best against Liverpool.“He understands the position, he protects his back four and he is no slouch on the ball.”It’s not clear how much of an impact the result on Thursday will have on the title race but Souness believes the momentum has not swung in favour of the defending Premier League champions. Souness said:“I understand why Pep Guardiola was so pleased after the game. Beforehand he had said that if City lost, the title race would be almost over. Now it is very much back on.“What I dont buy into is the view offered by many that the momentum has swung from Liverpool to City. The greater pressure will be on City not to let that four-point gap widen again.”

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham: Nine-man Spurs suffer late defeat to put Champions League hopes in doubt

Nathan Ake broke Tottenham hearts in the 91st minute
Son was given his marching orders for shoving Jefferson Lerma to the ground on 43 minutes before half-time substitute Foyth was sent off just three minutes after coming on for a dangerous tackle on Jack Simpson. With a two-man advantage, Bournemouth piled on the pressure, and were rewarded when Ake headed in Ryan Frasers corner in the 91st minute.A win would have secured Champions League football for a fourth successive season for Tottenham, however, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United can now close the gap on Mauricio Pochettinos men.It means Spurs are likely to have to beat Everton in their final game next Sunday to be guaranteed a fourth successive year of Champions League football, unless Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all lose this weekend.Heung-min Son will miss the Everton game next weekend3
Heung-min Son will miss the Everton game next weekend
It looked like rookie Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers was going to be the story of the game as he produced several fine saves on his Premier League debut as Spurs should have had the game wrapped up before their indiscipline.Pochettino’s team selection made it clear that he was not wanting their top-four fate to go down to the final day and a strong side made a dominant start.Lucas Moura nearly gave teenage goalkeeper Travers a Premier League debut to forget, but his shot from the halfway line flew just wide, while the Brazilian also headed over.It soon turned into more of a dream debut for Travers as he single-handedly kept the Cherries in the game in the first-half with a string of saves that shows exactly why he is thought so highly of.First he denied Dele Alli’s powerful shot with a strong parried save, then produced a flying stop to turn Moura’s effort over. His feet kept another Moura shot out before more acrobatics saw him tip an Alli header over the bar.Juan Foyth joined Heung-Min Son in the dressing room just three minutes after the restart3

Either side of those saves, Son should have scored after he waltzed through the defence but fired over.Spurs were lucky to have 11 men on the pitch when Eric Dier, already booked, went through the back of Joshua King, but they did not get to the half-time whistle with a full complement of players as Son was dismissed in the 43rd minute. The 26-year-old reacted angrily to Lerma trying to retrieve the ball and pushed his opponent over.Pawson immediately brandished the red card and he had it out again shortly after the restart as Spurs’ afternoon got even worse.Foyth joined Son in the dressing room when he overran the ball and went through with a foot raised on Simpson. Bournemouth had plenty of the ball but they struggled to create any clear-cut chances.Callum Wilson had a curling effort deflected and then glanced wide before their big chance came in the 79th minute when Lys Mousset headed straight at Lloris. That did not prove too costly as in time added on Ake lost his marker and headed into the bottom corner.

Barca hold a 1-0 advantage over the Premier League side and could be prepared to strike an even more telling blow once the summer transfer window opens. The 21-year-old has 12 months remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford, with reports earlier this month suggesting the striker was ‘close’ to signing a whopping 70million deal over five years. However, the delay in talks means Barcelona are hoping to take advantage. Ruben Loftus-Cheek will reportedly miss up to a year of football after suffering a serious injury during Chelsea’s friendly with New England Revolution. The Blues won 3-0 in the United States but Maurizio Sarri, the club’s manager, was dealt a huge blow when Loftus-Cheek went down injured, and was seen leaving the stadium on crutches and in a protective boot.Chelsea fans were distressed when post-match photos of Loftus-Cheek were shared on social mediaTwitter @CarefreeLewisG2
Chelsea fans were distressed when post-match photos of Loftus-Cheek were shared on social media
And, according to The Sun, the England midfielder faces a minimum six months on the sidelines, with a ruptured Achilles potentially keeping him out for a whole year. This means Loftus-Cheek will miss the Europa League final, this summer’s Nations League finals, and the start of next season.Gareth Southgate confirmed in a press conference today that Loftus-Cheek was going to be in his squad for next month’s Nations League finals, but he had to call-up a replacement after waking up and seeing the midfielder’s injury.“We will find out more about a couple of players in that period and then I am going to have to make a couple of decisions,” said Southgate. “But we can change if we have injuries after that date. Frankly there is every chance that is going to happen. “We have just got to make the best possible decisions really with the information that we have. It is constantly moving.“I went to bed last night and Ruben is in the squad and playing brilliantly and now it is a huge disappointment for him. He misses now a major European final and a brilliant opportunity with us.“In particular he has really come on in the last few months and looked strong and playing with a lot of confidence and I am really disappointed for him in particular.”Southgate also claimed Callum Hudson-Odoi, Loftus-Cheek’s Chelsea team-mate, would have been in the England squad if he did not pick up a serious injury of his own during the final weeks of the Premier League season.Southgate confirmed his 27-man England squad for the Nations League finals on Thursday afternoon@England2
