Tony Cascarino has named his Premier League Team of the Year, and it features NO Manchester United or Arsenal players. The talkSPORT host and pundit was challenged to make his XI on the Weekend Sports Breakfast, as we looked ahead to Sundays title finale. But, after the much-criticised PFA TOTY featured just one player who does not play for title rivals Manchester City or Liverpool Man Uniteds Paul Pogba, and even that wasnt a popular choice Casc was told he could only pick one player per team. The Premier League title race between Liverpool and Man City has gone right to the wire3

Salomon Rondon over Alexandre Lacazette?

Lacazette has been better than Aubameyang over the season, hes become a far better player for Arsenal and he was the only other one I was thinking about. But Rondons impact at Newcastle has been one of the main reasons why they stayed up. He turned up from West Brom inured in the summer and he didnt quite get going in his first ten games, but from that moment, to a man, I cant think or a more important player at any club. The way he led the line for them, I just had to go for him.

No Sterling?

With Liverpool you could have picked Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Robertson, but Mane was the one I kept going back to and thought, how many games has he changed over the season? Thats why I put him in.Hazard is obvious, I dont think theres any other Chelsea player. With Bernando Silva, again its so tricky because there are four of five players for Man City I could name Laporte, Sterling, Ederson but I just thought Silva, for me, has been a tenacious goalscorer and creator and he stepped up to a much better level.Cascarino picked Bernardo Silva over Young Player of the Year Raheem Sterling3

Sissoko over Eriksen from Spurs?

With Sissoko, eyebrows were raised when Tottenhamn paid 30m for him, but he’s just got better and better for Spurs this season. He and Wijnaldum were in the Newcastle team that got relegated it was great business to sign them from Tottenham and Liverpool.Moutinho, I cant believe Wolves managed to bring him into the club for 5m. Hes a Champions League-quality player! He creates, he runs that midfield with his passing and I think it was one of the best transfers that has been made in this country, bringing in a player of that international stature. Those two in midfield have been real standouts in that position.

No place for Player of the Year Van Dijk?

I totally respect that Van Dijk can be the centre-half, but were talking about the highest level in three or four positions.Mane was the one I kept going back to from Liverpool. At the start of the season, Salah was the one who took all the headlines but this year Mane has done that more often than any other forward, in a sensational season for Liverpool offensively.
View this post on Instagram What an amazing evening at the PFA awards last night. I am so proud and honoured to have won such a prestigious award and feel incredibly humbled to have been recognised by my fellow professionals in this way. As I mentioned last night when I received the award there are a few people I would like to thank. Firstly and most importantly thank you to my family for always being there to support me. Thank you to everyone at FC Groningen, Celtic FC and Southampton FC for being such a crucial part of my journey and development as a player. This of course would not have been possible without the unbelievable support I have from everyone at Liverpool FC. A special thank you to the manager for showing the belief in me and to all of my teammates who help me so much in every game on the pitch. This award is for you. And of course thank you to our amazing fans for the support since Ive been at Anfield. I love this club and have felt part of the family since the day I arrived. It was a privilege to have been there last night too to share it with Sadio, Robbo and Trent, congratulations on your trophies too Now time to focus on Wednesday night. See you in Barcelona. No Red Devils make the cut?

Im sorry, I cant have any Manchester United players. Defensively theyve been awful and recently going forward they have as well, so it was very, very hard to pick one of them.

Liverpool are improbable to make a host of signings this summer, but Klopp will be planning to strengthen a couple of zones in the squad. The lack of high-quality backup to the first-choice attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino is something that the club are potentially to address in the ongoing transfer market.

Tottenham vs Liverpool: Reds fanatic Simon Wilson buys 40 car to travel to Champions League final after refusing to pay extortionate flight price
A Liverpool fan has bought a 40 car to travel to the Champions League final because he refused to splash out on extortionate flights to Madrid. The Reds go head-to-head with Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Saturday in the first all-English final in the competition since 2008.Simon Wilson has embarked on a mammoth journey from Liverpool to Madrid… in a 40 carSimon Wilson3
Simon Wilson has embarked on a mammoth journey from Liverpool to Madrid… in a 40 car
Thousands of Liverpool fans have descended on the capital of Spain, and YouTube sensation, Simon Wilson, will be among that crowd.Wilson is best known for sneaking into high-profile events including Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Conor McGregor boxing match, as well as the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. And his latest challenge has seen him combine his two passions – Liverpool FC and vlogging – as he races to Madrid.Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Simon said: “I’ll be uploading a couple of videos, but the reason I’m doing this is not just for YouTube.“I was lucky enough to get a ticket in the ballet through my season ticket, but because the ballot wasn’t announced until recently I didn’t want to book transport.Wilson’s brother, Ben, bought the Skoda Favorit GLXI on FacebookSimon Wilson3

“When I looked online, the transport was so expensive it was ridiculous, the flights were around 800.”Simon wasn’t going to let the opportunity of potentially seeing his childhood team win a major trophy pass him by though, so sounded out his brother in a bid to sort an alternative method of transport. He said: “I rang up my brother, Ben, and asked him how much was the cheapest car we could get.”A short while later and Ben had managed to find a Skoda Favorit GLXI for sale on Facebookfor just 40.He explained: “When he told me I was like ‘just buy it now, we will worry about it afterwards’.”YouTube sensation Wilson has been spotted by other drivers on the waySimon Wilson3

Simon and Ben would later find out this particular vehicle is one of only six still licensed to drive in the UK.With transport sorted, Simon also decided to extend an invitation to one of his subscribers, who is a Tottenham supporter, with a seat spare in his car.The trio started their mammoth journey to Madrid outside Anfieldon Wednesday, travelling down the motorway to get to the ferry port in Dover. It proved to be a frustrating start though, as despite the Sat Nav saying the journey would take five hours, due to heavy traffic and the car being slow, it took over six – meaning Simon, Ben and the subscriber missed their ferry to Calais. Luckily, they were able to hop on the next ferry a short time later to continue their journey through France. The latest update on Simon’s channel sees the guys stopping off for some kip in a side road in Bordeaux – around six hours away from Madrid. The end is in sight for the lads, but whether the banged up car can last the last stretch remains to be seen. You can watch Simon’s journey to Madrid on his YouTube channel here.

It’s a wonderful sight when you watch a perfectly weighted pass split a defence and put forward through on goal.Through balls can leave defences out on their feet with almost no hope of preventing the attacking side putting the ball in the back of the net.In the Premier League we are blessed with numerous playmakers capable of doing the deed at any given moment, keeping fans and opponents on edge, anticipating the killer pass.According to OPTA statisticians, a pass splitting the defence for a team-mate to run on to is the criteria for a through ball. But currently the man to have played the most in the English top flight this season isn’t a player you would expect, despite his abilities on a football pitch. So, who is the ultimate splitter of defences? Referee Damir Skomina was alerted by the video assistant referee under the ‘serious missed incident’ VAR protocol late on in United’s round of 16 second leg tie away in Paris.UEFA said the referee awarded the spot-kick against PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe after viewing replays because “his arm was not close to his body” when Diogo Dalot’s shot struck it.“Following the on-field review, the referee confirmed that the distance that the ball travelled was not short and the impact could therefore not be unexpected,” guidance issued by UEFA on Friday read.Marcus Rashford celebrates scoring the penalty2

“The defender’s arm was not close to the body, which made the defender’s body bigger thus resulting in the ball being stopped from travelling in the direction of the goal. The referee, therefore, awarded a penalty kick.”Marcus Rashford scored the penalty to take United through on away goals.

There was plenty of controversy on the night about the penalty award, with BT Sport pundits Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Owen – all former United players – unanimous in their view that it should not have been given.FormerPremier Leagueofficial Peter Walton insists there was no doubt whileMark Clattenberg claimedit would not have been awarded in the domestic competition.Rangers manager Steven Gerrard felt the penalty should have been given and it prevented United from suffering an injustice.Guidance from UEFA referee’s chief Roberto Rosetti appeared to be consistent with Skomina’s decision, as he advised officials in January that “if the defender is making the body bigger to block the ball it is not fair”. Football’s law-making body the International Football Association Board (IFAB) moved to clarify the interpretation of handball at its annual general meeting last weekend. Its position is that if the ball strikes a player’s arm when it is extended beyond the body’s “natural silhouette” then a penalty should be awarded. It also said that, from next season, goals scored or created with use of the hand – even accidental use – will be disallowed.
