Chelsea make formal complaint to UEFA over racist abuse aimed at Blues star during Europa League clash vs Dynamo Kiev
Chelsea have made a formal complaint to European football’s governing body over racist abuse aimed at one of their players during last weeks Europa League defeat of Dynamo Kiev. The Blues won 5-0 in the Ukraine to book their place in the competition’s quarter-finals, though the final stages of the match were marred by alleged racist chants from home supporters.Chelsea beat Kiev 5-0 to reach the last eight1

An unnamed Chelsea player, understood to be Callum Hudson-Odoi, was the target of the abuse.A statement from the Stamford Bridge club read: “We can confirm a report of racist abuse directed at one of our players in the final minutes of the match in Kiev from a small section of home supporters. We wholeheartedly condemn such abhorrent behaviour.“The matter was reported to the referee at the final whistle and the chairman and club secretary spoke to the UEFA match delegate immediately after the match. We expect UEFA to conduct a fulsome investigation and we will provide full cooperation.” During the last two minutes of the match, winger Hudson-Odoi, 18, brought the incident – understood to have been monkey chants from a small group of ‘ultras’ home supporters in the corner of the end Chelsea were attacking – to the attention of team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta.Shortly after the final whistle, defender Azpilicueta went up to the referee to complain about the abuse.

Fabinho has only shown brief glimpses of his talent so far
Signed over the summer from Monaco, big things were expected of the 25-year-old. However, he’s made just nine appearances in all competitions, started only three Premier League matches – and been criticised for some shaky performances.Fabinho has shown some improvement recently, and just the other day Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, rejected suggestions the midfielder would be leaving Anfield in January. Nonetheless, PSG have shown interest in signing Fabinho when the transfer window reopens in just over a month, with Thomas Tuchel keen on adding to his squad with another central midfielder.A loan deal has been mooted, and L’Equipe, viaThe Sun, say PSG will use Liverpool’s visit to the Parc des Princes for Wednesday’s Champions League encounter as an opportunity to open talks with the club. The Reds clash with the Ligue 1 leaders knowing a defeat would throw their hopes of reaching the last 16 into peril.

Who is Ralph Hasenhuttl? The new Southampton manager has same coaching philosophy as Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp
It’s the most wonderful time of year, except if you’re a Southampton fan.Saints fans have had a pretty dismal few months, which has culminated in Mark Hughes losing his job as manager and them in the Premier League’s relegation zone.Hasenhuttl is the new Southampton manager and is keen to make the St Mary’s atmosphere electric2
Hasenhuttl is the new Southampton manager and is keen to make the St Mary’s atmosphere electric
However, there is a new man in charge and Ralph Hasenhuttl’s appointment should give supporters reason to cheer during the Christmas period.Twice he has taken over during a season and led teams to safety: first at Aalen in the German third division in January 2011, and then with Ingolstadt, who were bottom of the Bundesliga 2 when he was appointed in October 2013.Southampton say his principals on how football should be played are ones likely to strike a chord with fans. After all, you don’t get a nickname like the “Klopp of the Alps” for nothing, do you?The Austrian formed a close bond with Liverpool’s manager when the pair were on the same coaching course.“We [Klopp and I] did our coaching badges together and we know each other very well, Hasenhuttl toldbundesliga.comin May.I think we appreciate a similar philosophy on football we want to play a high tempo game, we want our guys to sprint around, press well and these are elements which make the game livelier and varied and get people excited.

Along the way, they memorably knocked Maurizio Sarri’s high flying Napoli out.I think no matter where I’ve worked, in Aalen or Ingolstadt or [Leipzig], the stadiums have always been full as a result of how we played, he once explained. Its successful, attractive and represents a particular way of life and that’s down to our philosophy. There’s a saying: either you give the people what they want to see or one of you looks for a new stadium. I agree with that 100 per cent.Hasenhuttl is known to get quite animated on the touchline2
Hasenhuttl is known to get quite animated on the touchline
He even admitted he is as animated as the Liverpool manager. I don’t know, at times I run a bit too far onto the pitch, he added. But that’s only in exceptional circumstances, and Jurgen does it too when a goal is scored!Klopp’s over-exuberant celebration against Everton landed him with an 8,000 fine, butSouthampton chairman Ralph Krueger probably won’t mind, though, considering it’s likely to mean progress.

Champions League: Liverpool can stun Bayern Munich in Germany after 0-0 draw at Anfield, insists Danny Murphy
Danny Murphy insists Liverpool have NOT blown their chances of dumping Bayern Munich out of the Champions League and are still well in the tie after their first-leg stalemate.Jurgen Klopps side were accused of misfiring again after they squandered a host of scoring opportunities in Tuesdays 0-0 draw at Anfield.Klopp reacts to one of his side’s many missed chances against Bayern2
Klopp reacts to one of his side’s many missed chances against Bayern
After their latest wobble and given Bayerns impeccable home record, few are giving Liverpool much of a hope of progressing ahead of their second leg trip to Germany.Bayern have only lost three of their last 30 home games in the Champions League and those were all at the hands of Real Madrid, who went on to lift the European Cup on every occasion.Liverpool, meanwhile, have been beaten in each of their three away games in Europe this season, against Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade.Yet, Murphy says this is not the end for his former club’s Champions League hopes, as the return of Virgil Van Dijk from suspension and of a fully-fit Roberto Firmino, who started on Tuesday despite only recently recovering from sickness, will give them a timely boost. Its not a bad result for Liverpool, with the way they can counter and the players they will have available for the away leg,” the ex-Reds midfielder told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. With Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren all missing, I think Klopp would have taken the clean sheet. The second-leg in Munich will be similar to when they go to Old Trafford at the weekend. Youre going to have a home team, one of the big boys, who are expected to come after you and it suits Liverpool when teams come onto them a little bit.I dont think its as bad a result as some are making out. There were lots of positives from the performance, there were lots of good displays.Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was outstanding against Bayern2

And dont forget, Firmino will be fully fit and Van Dijk will be back. I still they are well in the tie.Arsenal legend David Seaman co-host on Wednesdays Sports Breakfast agrees with Danny, saying Liverpools persistent goal threat could see them stun Bayern.Going back to Bayern Munich will be difficult, but I think Liverpool have a good chance, said the former England goalkeeper.I still think they will score, so with that away goal, it could be really important.
