Sergio Ramos: UEFA investigating Real Madrid defender over intentional booking comments
Sergio Ramos is being investigated by UEFA over an alleged intentional booking after he reportedly told reporters he ‘forced’ a yellow card in Real Madrid’s Champions League defeat of Ajax.Ramos, the Real captain, was bookedfor a cynical challenge on Kasper Dolberg late on in his side’s 2-1 victory at the Johan Cruyff Arena. That booking was his third in this season’s Champions League, and it came as Ramos was making his 600th appearance for the club.It means he will now miss the second leg clash with Ajax at the Bernabeu, but, crucially, will be available to play in the quarter finals should Real progress. Many viewers were suspicious that the foul was tactical and Ramos reportedly told reports after the match he would ‘be lying if I said I didn’t force [the booking]’.Ramos was accused of being booked on purpose2

But the World Cup winner then backtracked on these comments by tweeting: “I have not forced the card.“In a game there are many tensions, many sensations and many pulsations.“You have to make decisions in seconds. The best of today is the result. The worst, not being able to be with my team-mates for a game.”It has now been confirmed UEFA are investigating a potential intentional booking, with European football’s governing body ready to suspend players found guilty of such an offence.UEFA regulations state a player will receive a ‘suspension for two competition matches or for a specified period for clearly receiving a yellow or red card on purpose’.Should he be banned for two matches, Ramos would miss the first leg of the quarter finals, subject to Real advancing.Ramos was booked and sent off against Ajax in 20102

This is not the first time Ramos has been accused of getting booked in this competition on purpose.Back in 2013, Ramos along with former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso were both cautioned late on in a 3-0 quarter-final first leg victory over Galatasaray. Then again in 2010, the same pair were booked and then sent off in a group match with Ajax.
