However, the 24-year-old has been making as much an impact off the pitch as he has on it.The City forward was subjected to racial abuse during their match at Chelsea earlier this season and following the incident took to Instagram when he accused the media of helping to ‘fuel racism.
View this post on Instagram Good morning I just want to say , I am not normally the person to talk a lot but when I think I need my point to heard I will speak up. Regarding what was said at the Chelsea game as you can see by my reaction I just had to laugh because I dont expect no better. For example you have two young players starting out there careers both play for the same team, both have done the right thing. Which is buy a new house for there mothers who have put in a lot of time and love into helping them get where they are, but look how the news papers get there message across for the young black player and then for the young white payer. I think this in unacceptable both innocent have not done a thing wrong but just by the way it has been worded. This young black kid is looked at in a bad light. Which helps fuel racism an aggressive behaviour, so for all the news papers that dont understand why people are racist in this day and age all i have to say is have a second thought about fair publicity an give all players an equal chance.A post shared by Raheem Sterling x (@sterling7) on
Speaking to the New York Times, Sterling explained he is tired of stereotypes about black players. From the very start of my career, there has been a perception of a flashy kid from London: loves cars, loves the flashy lifestyle, he said.Im not saying Im a saint or anything, but that is the complete opposite of who I am.[Fans] do not know me. They will define me by what they read about me; that is how they will treat me. When people are making the public believe you are a character you arent, that is hurtful, and it is degrading.Sterling has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season3

Sterling referenced a story from 2016 that claimed he was looking to buy a seventh car to have one for each day of the week. These were cars that I had had between the ages of 17 and 23, he said. But they made it that Raheem has one for Monday, one for Tuesday, and so on. All these cars are gone, sold. But what do you do when you sell a car? You buy a new one.But they have a picture of me in each car, so the story is that I drive a car each day. People see that and think thats what hes up to buying cars, living the best life. The City star was subjected to racial abuse earlier this season3

Sterling also offered insight into what needs to change in the media and has discussed the issue at length with his agent Aidy Ward and City captain Vincent Kompany.Vinnie made a really good point, Sterling said. He said its not the fault of the people writing the stories: It is because there are not enough black and minority ethnic people in high office in the media. If there was someone else of Jamaican descent who the people writing the stories have to answer to, they would look at it and say, It cant run because of how it will look’. They would understand this side of the story. They have lived on this side of the world. They understand how these people feel. The people that read it take it in and judge straightaway who the person is. That is where I was coming from. I was not saying they are racist. But they are fuelling it for the people reading it. It is constant, and I dont think it is fair, but who am I?
